Reg for Pony
I am getting a Pony and am looking at the Mares Rebel 2 for the reg. What do you think of this setup. I do dive Lake MI and it gets down to 45 degrees. I was also thinking of useinf the Rebel as my primary and putting my ScubaPro older model on the Pony.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Do you mean the R2 Rebel or MR12 Rebel? (or something else).
In any case, one of the things to look for in a Pony reg is how the hoses will run (both the LP hose for the 2nd stage _and_ the HP port for a SPG or button). Try to visualize how things will look with whatever setup you are planing. Some regs just won't work out for particular setups because of the direction the ports face. For 45 degrees, my first choice would be a diaphragm 1st stage with the extra dry environmental seal (called different things by different brands, but available for almost all of them). Rich |

I was afraid that it would not be good in colder water. With ST price match, the extra 10%, and my soon to earn $50, It would be a little over $50 for a brand new 1st & 2nd stage!

I think this would be a much better match for what you are planning if price is a big factor for you:

As for the Rebel 2, Mares makes quality gear and piston regs are simple, robust, and very reliable. I don't think your pony will have any difficulty using one. Good luck with teaching your pony to dive! |

As for the reg, low 40s are pushing it for a piston first stage, better to have a diaphragm, especially if you are ever considering doing ice diving. Better to buy right than buy twice. |
