Liveaboards while single?

How many people have done a liveaboard alone? Did you pay a premium to have a room by yourself? If you got roomed with a stranger, how did that go? Were you roomed with someone of the same or opposite sex?

Have any of you been buddied with someone on a liveaboard that was a poor buddy? If so, how did you go about getting another buddy without offending your previous buddy? You're going to be with that person in close quarters for a week.

I haven't done a liveaboard, but I do travel alone and have inquired with some of the liveaboards. Expect to pay around 50% more for a single supplement to get a solo room.

As far as "insta-buddies" go, I usually end up "buddied" with the DM... which means I usually do my own thing.

I did a liveaboard alone over New Years -- I went with group called singlerdivers.com -- which is designed for divers without buddies. They match you up with a same-sex roommate.

From what I read about other boats, it is the same thing. If you say you are willing to share a room -- they will try to find you a roomate and you will not pay the single supplement.

I've done many live aboards as a single. If you tell them you are willing to share there is no single supplement and they will usually match you with a member of the same sex but it depends on what country your in. At any rate I've scored my own room this way a few times on less then full boats.

I've usually had good luck with buddies but if I have one I can't dive with I'll just tell them our styles and objectives are different.

Thank you all for the info. While still young and semi-moneyless, I would be willing to room with someone if it meant saving the supplement fee. It is nice to know that they do try to accommodate singles.

There were some single divers on out liveaboard in January. A couple of them ended up with their own rooms without paying more because it wasn't a full boat. Seemed to work out well

Check out one of the liveaboard that is not automatically designed for "couples'.

Like the Ultimate Getaway out of Ft Myers that goes to the Dry Tortugas. They just have a couple big large berthing areas and you get a bunk.

It makes the trip a little cheaper because they can accomadate more divers this way and you don't have to worry about paying for part of a cabin that you dont use.

I think the caribbean explorer in the Bahamas or Turks & Caico's has a "single diver bunk room" also.

I currently have a spot open in a twin room for a single male diver if anyone here is interested. It's aboard the Turks & Caicos Aggressor, 8/16-8/23/08. Great trip! Roommate is a great guy too. The group is mostly DM's and Instructors, so it would be fun! If you are interested, email me at sforbes@cfuels.com

Wish I could get that time off, I love doing livaboards. Only way to go. You get the most diving you can for your buck
