Bush to lift offshore drilling ban

White House: Bush to lift offshore drilling ban

Congress must still lift legislative ban before offshore drilling can start

BREAKING NEWS

WASHINGTON - In another push to deal with soaring gas prices, President Bush on Monday will lift an executive ban on offshore drilling that has stood since his father was president. But the move, by itself, will do nothing unless Congress acts as well.
The president plans to officially lift the ban and explain his actions in a Rose Garden statement, White House press secretary Dana Perino said.
There are two prohibitions on offshore drilling, one imposed by Congress and another by executive order signed by former President Bush in 1990. The current president, trying to ease market tensions and boost supply, called last month for Congress to lift its prohibition before he did so himself.

Another example of the planet suffering for our shortsightedness. We have always known oil was a finite resource and now the government acts all blindsided by the oil crisis we are in.

"But the move, by itself, will do nothing unless Congress acts as well."

Therefore, the answer is clearly #4, this will not make a difference.

I think it will make a diferwnce since people will learn that they only have to take down one more rulingbwfore gas prices drop. I still think its better to not unban off shore drilling though since it will only ne a brief period of lower gas prices until we run out of gas again. Plus, if people truly wanted to lower carbon emissions, they would be using much more fuel efficient cars.

Put into words exactly what I was thinking... thank you.

Regaurdless of the price of oil or fuels, we need to (countinue) to develope and build our own supplies for national security sake.

And its hypocritical for us as a country to exploit the rest of the world for 70% of our oil needs yet not be willing to use our own. There is certainly a greed component to OPEC, but also a fear that the US goal is to exploit everyone else's natural resources while hoarding our own supplies.

That is called being smart. We are protecting our country more than they are protecting their own.

While this is most certainly true, China and India are the ones driving up the demand currently.

The question is does it make sence to sit on oil fields that are larger than all of the middle east's, while we burn half of the crude oil just to get the tanker across the ocean.
