Thats why I don't touch anything, I don't know what is and isn't dangerous. The blue rings are only visible when the Blue-ringed octopus is about to attack

Tim ![]() They called themselves Guerrilla Divers. Composed of elite divers with Macho mentalities, back when men were men, and FEAR was a lispy companion of the common Man. It was a time before insurance liabilities, lawsuits or beauracratic regulation of the "sport". Guerrilla divers didn't need "Buoyancy Compensator Vests". In fact, "Anyone who needs a BC deserves to drown" was a popular adage. Exploration and the Hunt came first, excitement and fun followed. Safety was the stepchild of fitness, good reflexes and a cool head. This was a time of great Adventure. http://www.sfdj.com/dive/deep.html |

The one thing I'll say on this is, times change and people learn things.
When I was certified in '87, one of the first things our instructor did on one of our dives was catch a porcupine fish, get it to inflate, and pass it around the class. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. (I was 16 at the time) I'm ashamed to say I did this a couple of times myself, on my own, later in my diving. Before I learned better. I now know better, of course, and would stop anyone who tried to do something like that, but doesn't change the fact that things weren't always as they are now... and it was simple ignorance begging for education, not malice, that caused it. I saw someone doing this just a few years ago in Jamaica. I had a quiet talk with the person in question after the fact, and he was horrified to hear that it could cause real harm to the animal, and swore to never do it again. Again, it's all about education, not blame and malice ... until proven otherwise, of course. I wish someone had told me, quietly, in my earlier years.
