My Colors

While visiting the local postoffice I noticed the AMERICAN flag flying upside down on top of the POW/MIA flag that was flying right side up. Asked the postmaster about the flag and he admited he knew the grommet on the top of the flag was ripped off and that a new replacement flag was on order. I insisted he take down the flag if it could not be displayed properly. I am a veteran and told the postmaster to give the flag to me and I will see that it is taken care of properly. My question is why didn't the postmaster address this problem properly when he discovered the situation? Why did he continue to allow My Colors 2 show disrespect outside a FEDERAL facility?

While I am not a veteran...that is one of my biggest pet peeves. It drives me insane when I see a flag tattered or displayed incorrectly. Thank you for insisting that it was removed.

There are actual laws governing the display of flags, although never enforced

Agreed, but I also think it is sad when a Federal agency can't follow Federal laws. Something as basic as showing respect for the symbol of our country seems pretty simple. After all, there are thousands of people overseas trying to make sure that the flag never falls.

Also, an upside down flag is a symbol of DISTRESS. It's the flag version of MOF:

THE FLAG CODE
Title 36, U.S.C., Chapter 10
As amended by P.L. 344, 94th Congress
Approved July 7, 1976

§ 176. Respect for flag: No disrespect should be shown to the flag of the United States of America; the flag should not be dipped to any person or thing. Regimental colors, State flags, and organization or institutional flags are to be dipped as a mark of honor.
(a) The flag should never be displayed with the union down, except as a signal of dire distress in instances of extreme danger to life or property.

I agree to all the the above, the postmaster should have known better. Thanks Thor for teaching me something, I did not know that was a sign of distress... I figured it was some kind of sign of disrespect...

I hate it when the colors look bad. Remember after 9-11 people ran out and got flags to show our unity...Then I ran across this little nugget. Seems the credentials for the Democratic convention have the US flag upside down in the picture..the artist thought the blue color looked better with Obama's suit.......jees.....

Flying the flag upside down is a symbol of distress, which actually may be appropriate outside the post office if yours is anything like the local one here!

J/k I'm very glad you had it taken down!
