If you ask me if you can't dive a 10' pool all alone, Maybe you shouldn't be diving at all. A great place for practice, not much chance anything can go wrong unless you are totally clueless.

Oh.. I definitely plan on that. My pool averages about 3-4 knots during the day and the tide comes in at noon. The waves can get quite rough...

Rox: Heh. I think I can handle myself :P

I've got an in-ground pool in the back yard too. I dive it all the time. The water is 7 feet at the deep end.

I like diving it at night, with a tiny flashlight. The light highlights all of the defects in the floor, under the vinyl, that you can't see in the day time. You can also see how the water reflects/refracts the beam from the flashlight when you get close to the surface.

I also do a lot of "safety" training stuff. I'll pull off my mask and throw it over my shoulder, close my eyes, then take off all my gear, and then switch to my octo, and then put on all my gear..... and stuff like that.

I also like to play around with my computer. It won't activate until I'm at least four feet deep, so I sit on the bottom and purposesly slow my breathing to watch my computer NDT time change. Then, breath quickly (or purge the octo) and watch the NDT change again. It's interesting, and I learn how the computer responds.

Remember your training - don't hold your breath, and emit bubbles slowly from you mouth any time the regulator isn't in your mouth... keep the airway open.

and have fun.

Seriously? I can't imagine how much less enjoyable my life (and particularly my childhood) would have been if I restricted my swimming to only those times I had a "buddy." Whether pool, swimming hole / pond, the river down the street a quarter mile, or the ocean a wee bit farther, I wouldn't trade the enjoyment of the water for the marginally increased safety achieved by avoiding it unless accompanied (I'm not talking about Scuba here, but certainly include snorkeling and a variety of other general water-bound activites). Heck, there were (and are) times when I and others would consider certain water activities at least a bit spoiled by the presence of others. Not bagging on you -- you're free to make your own choices in light of your own preferences -- I just honestly haven't ever heard anyone take your approach to the water before.
I bet he doesn't run with scissors either.
