Spree moving to the Keys
I was looking at the Spree website Spree Expeditions SCUBA Diving Flower Gardens and Dry Tortugas
It seems that they are moving the boat from Texas to Florida. Any thoughts, insights, comments? |

It is very disappointing but I understand the business reasons behind the move. Fuel prices and weather.
A Dry Tortugas trip uses about half the fuel as a Flower Gardens trip, and when this decision to move was made marina diesel was running $4.50 per gallon with no end in sight. Who knew it would plunge in half in the last six months? Who knows if it might double in the next six months? Flower Gardens has about a 50% go rate overall, lower in the spring and higher in the summer. I think Frank mentioned that in the last several years in the Keys he has had but one trip blown out for weather. I think the Keys offer a longer diving season as well. On the other hand, there is much more competition there. BTW, if anyone would like to join me on my 5-day Dry Tortugas trip on the Spree this September for the Coral Spawn, see this thread.

As far as I know the Fling is remaining and operating as always.
The two boats were originally owned and operated as one company (Rinn Boats), then the boats owned separately by present owners but operated under a common banner (Gulf Diving), and now are wholly independent of each other.

Only the Fling runs regularly scheduled charters. There are a few private charters that will run out there by request but it will be a day trip on a much smaller boat and is cost prohibitive. I don't know anyone who has ever done one this way. See Fish n Divers for one.
