just curious....

conditions permitting, on a boat dive. Anyone else giant stride with fins in hand? I do this, as I can't stand walking(shuffling) down the boat with fins on! Learned this from a dive icon, (S. Wtrmn) yrs ago, and been doing it ever since. Have yet to be on a boat where anyone else does, not even buddy-hubby!

I can't say I've ever done that. Usually my plan is to have one fin on and one off-easier to walk and then wait until I'm next in line to but the other fin on-depending on the boat and setup. Most of the time I'm in the waddle along line with everyone else.

The only problems I could see with this method is; you could get pulled a way from the group if there's a good current which means more effort to catch up, as well as take a bit more time to clear the entrance area and slowing down the entry process for the rest of the divers. Also bad ju-ju if you have a BC malfunction.

But if it works for you, go for it!

never seen that...I'd be worried that if I did something really dumb, like not turn my air on, and not have any air in my BC, that I wouldn't be able to drop my weights and swim it up....or swim for any other kind of reason

It's just plain dangerous to jump into the water with no good method of propulsion. Anytime you're dealing with water over your head you should have fins on, and they should not come off until you have one hand securely on the swim step/ladder, if then.

Put your fins on just before you jump in. There's no need to be walking around the boat deck with them on.

If you jump into water over your head with no fins on, any failure of your BC, or if your air isn't on, etc., can quickly turn into a deadly problem. And what happens if you drop your fins on impact?

This option makes no sense to me, and sounds potentially very dangerous. In a perfect world, it may be fine in some circumstances, but it anything goes wrong, it could easily turn a minor problem into something very very bad.

great input, thanks. I did say conditions permitting.
That being said, gear check on board, bc(I always inflate, then squeeze the cell with both arms (good tip here) for leaks, this after seeing a bc malfunction upon entry (she was wearing 40lbs lead, alot even for here),go to the back of the boat, and stride(without fins, can push farther from the boat), off to the side, opposite the swing of the boat. Again without fins, I'm always 1st in the pool. Haven't held up any other divers, or more to the point, haven't been jumped on either........ouch!
I do like the 1 fin on, 1 fin off........diddle diddle dumpling, my son John!(I digress, old nursery rhyme!)
I should also say, I do this solely in the bathtub style of diving in the ABC's!

Walk to the edge of the boat if you must, but please spare me worrying about you and put your fins on before you splash.

Gotta agree with everybody here. Put your fins on right before you go in. As Compudude said no need to be walking around the boat with them on.

The only "conditions permitting" I can think if is jumping into ~4' of water.

I once saw a BC burst at the seams on impact from jumping into the water. I also saw an entire inflator assembly pull right off the BC after jumping in the water. Stuff happens. You want your fins on in case it happens to you. You also don't want to drop your fins on impact, and lose them, and then have a tough time getting back onto the boat. Again, stuff happens.

Two moments at the edge of the boat putting your fins on vs. a potential life-threatening situation if something goes wrong? The risk-to-reward ratio is WAY off there.
