diving and down syndrome

I have a son with Down syndrome... He is 9 and obviously, not old enough to dive, however, looking to the future his dad and I would love for him to dive with us. In the past, I found 1 or 2 articles about a person with DS being certified but not much else. If it helps, my son IS very physical...can do what most other 9 year old boys can, is healthy, is becoming a good swimmer (and loves it....and loves to use his snorkel and mask) and is a smart, high-functioning kid. I think maybe as a late teenager or adult, he'll be able to get his open water with no problem. Anyone know of certified divers who happen to have Down syndrome?

I don't think any of the major agencies would certify someone with DS, but you should check directly with them to see.

Why not?
Here's a link I found: Down Syndrome Development Council FORUM-March 2008

In the article "Break down outdated stereo types and raise expectations and promote inclusion" a mum tells that her son scuba dives.

Might I suggest looking into the Handicap Scuba Association. They specialize in training people with physical and mental handicaps to dive as well as train people to be buddies for handicapped divers.

No need to ask a question like that here. If you and hubby are experienced, have at it. There are no scuba police and no "laws" that someone has to be certified to dive (except for "tort" laws. LOL)

I am one who is against "certifying" some one too early. If however you and your husband want to give the kid this experience, I would recognize you as the parents and the buddy team.

Just recognize the kid's as well as your own limitations.

(I offer this caveat: I am no professional and not advocating you do anything unsafe, lol. You know better than others the kid's abilities and what is right.)

I would recommend checking in with your son's doctor prior to beginning diving activity. As I am sure I don't have to tell you, some of the medical concerns associated with Down's may be relevant to diving safety/comfort. Particularly the cardiac and ENT issues that some people with Down's have.

Good luck!!

talked to an instructor and a course director about the situation. both said as long as doctor signs a medical waiver he/she can be certified. but, there is no reason dependibg on his stipulations

Agreed. Thank you. I should have said that.
