I've actually wondered how they could possibly be making money on the trips but I think they do it because it keeps people involved and creates a loyalty to the shop.
Ding, ding, ding, we have a winner.

The price includes beverages and snacks. If you want a guided dive, that's extra. Not really whining but the shops always saying they can't get people to participate in scheduled dive trips and this is likely why.

Yup. They're ripping people off. If you want to charge more than the base rate for something, you have to provide added value. $10 worth of sandwiches and a $5 bus ride does not add $70 in value, IMO.

I enjoy going on trips with my LDS because after diving with them so much, I consider them to be my friends. I might be able to book the trip myself, but I kind of like having them do it for me. Plus, I know I'm going to get to hang out with people I know and trust as dive buddies, as well as always meeting other divers. If they get something out of it, well, they did the work, they are in business to make money and I don't feel like they are gouging me.

For 70 bucks, that better be steak 'n beer.

This was more about local outings than trips but the parallels are there. Yes, you are the targeted audience of LDS sponsored events. Having trusted dive buddies and reliable dive site info is very important for a diver. However, many divers have found these same things with local dive clubs or online forums.
