If it was another doctor I know, he would have prescribed antibiotics for a stubbed toe. Whenever he cannot figure out what is wrong he gives antibiotics and recommends over-the-counter pain killers (Advil, Tylenol, etc.). This is why I made my wife quick going to him. If it is a sinus infection, i.e. bacterial, you should be feeling a LOT better after 3 days of antibiotics. Keep taking them until they are gone and you'll be fine. If you've been on the antibiotics for more than 3 days and see no sign of improvement, I'd see another doctor. Did she give you basic penicillin? That is usually all you need for sinus infection. |

bacterial sinusitis
Actually, bacterial sinusitis is not nearly as common as viral and allergic sinusitis. Therefore, most cases of sinusitis (of unknown cause) will not respond to antibiotics.
At the same time, some might argue that the antibiotic plays a preventive role, ensuring that viral sinusitis does not facilitate the secondary development of a bacterial infection. Still others would argue that decongestants would be adequate to this task. The latter approach would also have the benefits of not increasing vulnerability to either yeast infection (in women) or undesirable changes in GI flora (and diarrhea). Quote:

Been on antibiotics since Tuesday morning. The sinus pressure is gone, but the sore throat get worse as the day goes on. In the mornings actually feel pretty good, but later in day the sore throat comes back. I'm thinking all the junk draining into my throat is causing the soreness. At this point, I'm going to try an old family remidy.....salt water, I'll be in it Saturday afternoon.
