Visibility

I know this might be a stupid question but hey im not going to learn if i dont ask....

When judging visibility do you estimate the distance you can see clearly or do you estimate the distance you can still see something even if you can bearly make it out....say maximum distance.

Im a spoiled Florida brat (or so Ive been told) so I dont need to bluff my visibility so I put the visibility that I can see clearly and not "think" i can see something

The definition I've heard all the time, is at what horizontal distance can you tell the other object in the water is a diver. So how far away can you just make out the other person.

Yeh well the water i dive in is more often than not quite murky and i am a fisherman so i am prone to overestimation. :P

I got one of these for my DiveMaster Mapping Project: DF 2200PX Handheld Depthfinder.

Yesterday, at the Marine Room Reef at La Jolla (Southern California), I bounced the signal off a large rock/kelp mass. The object was just barely discernable as to what it was. The readout said it was 12.8 feet away.

Larry:

These could be cool "toys" to have in stock!

This is neat. I love gadgets. Especially when they have scuba implications. This might be usesful on my the under water fishing exploits that I've been planning. Thank you for the link Ian.

I go by how far away I can actually see something, not just the shape but really SEE it. Usually less than most people I dive with.

I live in Texas so visibility was something i only read about until i dove COZUMEL then i knew what it was and i miss it every time i dive CSSP. Which is typically 0-15 feet on a good day. My last dive there my dive buddy and i were shoulder to shoulder and we had a hard time seeing each other.
