While my dive buddy takes photos on a dive, I love to just kneel on a sandy part and just wait and watch things to come to me.

I finally realized to slow down after I ran out of air in an al80 with in15 minutes.

Then I did a dive with a few people that actually knows how to dive and I kept swimming away. One pulled me to the side and said to follow him. Even in a rock quarry, you can see a lot more stuff. It's not a race, slow down.

Now, in my BP/W with an al80, I can get 47 minutes @ 18 feet. (Previously, at the same site/depth (a year earlier) I only managed 20 minutes.) It's getting better!

Michael

I like counting my breaths and trying to not kick a full cycle for two breaths or more...

I also have a tendency to ride a little low and slow, so maybe that helps?

Most of the resorts I've been to (except for those in Cozumel, which are all drift dives) will watch the divers on their first dive or two. Those who show good skills are usually allowed to dive on their own or at least allowed to lag behind the group as long as you follow the rules IE return to the boat when told, don't exceed depth limits set in the briefing, etc.

Going to somewhere like Bonaire where every diver is treated like an adult and expected to be able to dive their own plan is also an option. Even on the DM led dives divers are allowed to stick with the group or set their own pace.
