Uninformed News

I just happened to flip by USA today and on the front page of their on-line edition they have an article headlined "World's Scariest Shark Dives" What irks me is that the picture next to it is of someone swimming next to a...if you don't like horror films don't read this...a whale shark. Sorry, that's just irresponsible/uninformed journalism. Sure, click on the article and the picture with the article is of a school of hammerheads...that would make my heart beat faster...but c'mon whale sharks, scary?

I'm not sure of their readership, but maybe they get a large number of plankton subscribing to their paper??

I've swam with hundreds of scalloped hammerheads in the Galapagos with no problems. Now great hammerheads are a different story but no problem with the scalloped variety. So even the hammerheads might be bogus as well.

My wife and I are both reporters (nearly 40 years in the business combined) and we hate that attitude of whatever sells...I guess that's why the headline bothers me (us) so much. Our attitude is even if a little detail is wrong, its still wrong. Bet you can tell we're real popular in the newsroom sometimes

Thats good that your both like that with the details, local press that came when we did our lake clean-up got the day wrong and they also took a picture of a diver swimming and the headline was the divers name followed by coming out of the lake after the clean-up. The clean-up didnt even begin untill the reporter left.

All reporters make honest mistakes from time to time because we are human its how its handled that makes the difference, if I make a mistake and either I discover it or its pointed out I own up to it. As for the reporter you are talking about that's just plain lazy

Kinda like the news saying "and the dives oxygen tank was empty". Most tanks aren't O2 tanks.
