Who has been NARCED?...Your story here

I have been diving since April of this year. I have made 57 dives. I had already made one dive for 43 minutes at 40 feet. Using air. On the second dive my buddy and I talked about doing a deep dive. I should have known better. We made the descent down to an 85' training platform and followed a training rope down to the 100' platform. Water was about 52 degress. I had on a 7/5 with hood and gloves. We hung around for about 2 minutes sticking our computers down to the bottom trying to see who could log the deepest depth. (acting goofy I guess). I hit 110'. Anyway, after a bit I started watching my buddy and things began to look and feel different just slightly. I began to think how cool looking he looked swimming around. Then I felt a feeling coming on very strong now that I have a hard time describing. I was aware of my surroundings but I couldn't quite think straight. Yes, a feeling of being intoxicated I guess. In my mind I knew something wasn't right and I began a rather quick ascent. I tried to watch my computer but I could not concentrate enough to see the numbers clearly. I did have the since to motion to my dive buddy with a thumbs up. I remember I kept pointing to my head. At about 75' I stopped and tried to concentrate. The symptoms began to go away. I stayed there for 3 minutes and all was fine. My buddy was looking at me like what's up. I wrote narced on my slate and I could tell he was supprised. After the dive we created a hand signal that we would both recognize that would indicate the symptoms of narcosis. I was just thankful to the good lord that I was able to think straight enough to know what to do.

A common sign for "narc'ed" is pointing at your temple with your index finger and twirling it. It's the same sign we westerners use when indicating somebody else is crazy.

That's exactly what we decided to use as a symbol.

Hummm, my dive buddies do that signal then shrug their shoulders. Does the mean I'm narced all the time?

I don't know if I was narc'ed or not, but my first dive after getting certified took me down to 79' and I was definitely mellowed out and relaxed. Maybe it was just the warm water and the good time I was having. I dunno, I dont' think I'd ever get narc'ed around here; there's nothing deep enough or if I could find something deep, it'd probably be cold and the visibility would suck so I wouldn't want to dive it anyways.

I can't comment on the narcosis feeling since I have never experienced it. Yep been over 100' many a time but so far with 80 dives, no narcosis. Even had my buddy watch me the last couple of times since they say that sometimes you don't realize that you are narced.
The signal I was taught was the whirling finger. Thought the shrugged shoulder is also one that I use with a DB of mine.
His story is that he was to go to X' and shoot a bag and follow the line up. Well they got to the spot and the instructor motioned for him to shoot the bag..he shrugs his shoulders. So the instructor points to the spool and bag and my buddy shrugs again. So the instructor unclips the bag and spool and hands them to him. Still nothing. She he takes the bag and spool and shoots it himself. They made it back fine.

Getting narced seems to be an individual thing. Some people notice it more than others. I don't recall ever feeling intoxicated but I do get more of a tunnel vision type thing going below 100'. Just because I don't feel it doesn't mean that I am not being affected. I just try to pay more attention to gauges and buoyancy when I crack 80' or so.

My dive buddies use a different narc'ed signal. They look at me then extend the middle finger. I mean, I think it means narc'ed.

But, to directly answer the question, I have been narc'ed. Only, I felt it as more of a growing paranoia. I did not realize this was also considered a narc'ed feeling until I read it here.

It is also highly dependent on how you feel about a dive on any given day. Recently, I dove to 85 feet one day for a dive that I was not prepared to go deep on. I should have called the dive. I didn't...dumbass. I suffered the narc'ed I described.

The next day, I was prepared for the same deep dive. We went down and I felt good all the way. No narce'd feeling.

Well I guess I'm not the only one that hasn't knowing been narced.

Vercingetorix brings up a good point. You can do the same dive under the same conditions and it can affect you once and not the other. Difference in something with the body.
