I prefer boat diving as I like to gear up and fall off the boat right at the dive site (which is why I love liveaboards). I'm not a big fan of carrying heavy gear, which is the only reason I don't do more shore diving. However, we have a 2-week trip to Bonaire planned for next year, so I'm really going to be able to decide if I still prefer boat diving.

Honestly I will do either...If its a boat dive on the ocean I will add a bit of dramamine to the gear list. I think it all depends on your dive site as some things are not too far from shore.

Boat diving is easier, because you don't have to lug gear as far (per dive, at least), and no need to deal with sand and surf entries. There are also many sites you can reach by boat that you just can't get to by shore.
That said, the convenience factor and cost savings of shore diving is considerable. Important factor when you're doing LOTS of training dives... boats can be impractical (and wasteful) in that instance. I derive great enjoyment from both and do both as often as time and funds permit. |

Being a world renown chummer....I love shore diving, the best places in the world for simply walking into the water and dropping down onto some of the most spectacular reefs are in Bonaire and Curacao. We spent 2 weeks in Curacao and got in 26 (x 2 people) dives in 10 days....Since we brought our own gear the costs was for air only....

If someone says they don't see anything on a shore dive, then they're either diving in the wrong place, or not looking very well. Of course, if is possible to jump off a boat at a location where there is nothing to look at, though hopefully if you're paying for the trip they will know what they're doing and drop you someplace better than that.
I generally prefer diving off boats, unless the shore dive is very convienient or special. Hauling gear all over the place doesn't do much for me, I'd rather hop in the water or hop on the boat without all that. |
