Obx 2007
My daughter was born in 1988 in Danbury CT and raised for a few months in NY before we came back here to Tennessee. When she was a baby we would take my first husband to work and watch the Hudson river and ferrys as something to do on occasion when traffic backed up on the West side Highway. She can honestly say she did see the ocean and beach once or twice when she was an infant. As I am told that doesn’t count.
So when she began diving lessons a few months ago along with her dad, she wanted to go and see and dive in the ocean. This year we were not going to let anything stand in our way. For over a month we had planned our daughters 19th birthday to be eventful. We began a month early buying her gifts. Since she didn’t have a baby shower when I was pregnant, she managed to have a birthday shower all month. Buying her all her dive gear. And what ever she wanted and needed. She got to pick out her place to celebrate and that was OBX, the Outer Banks North Carolina. We planned double planned worked overtime and were ready. We left right after sundown and took a moonlight drive to OBX, Which is 513 miles from our house in East Tennessee. It was a wonderful trip. Uneventful and in some places downright creepy and empty. We traveled over long bridges on the waterways, over alligator swamps and ocean inlets. We arrived just as the sun was breaching the beach. The room we rented was beautiful. We slept after that trip, but not for long and when we got up after our naps we went and rented tanks at the Dive shop. If you are ever in OBX Outer Banks Dive Shop, Issac is a great person and the dive shop is literally to dive for! He briefed us on the ocean and where is best to dive. Now I am not a diver. I am a snorkeler and freediver. We headed out to the beach and Margo just was stunned. Literally if you have never seen the ocean it’s a sight to behold and often too much to take in. We were cautioned to watch the waves and surf to make sure what you are doing. So we played in the sand for a while and I took her out to sit in the surf. She got accustomed to it and donned her gear, ready to dive. But the surf literally was too powerful and it knocked her. It knocked my husbands weight belt loose. It's lying in the ocean somewhere. So, then they came back up to the beach. They both stripped gear and tried body surfing, which she loves and my husband loves. So when dear husband came up he suggested I go and play with our daughter in the surf. I was wearing full street clothes and forgot I had my wallet in my back pocket. And so for those few precious moments I body surfed! Yup I like it too. Forgetting that I had our money and my Id and change safely tucked in my pockets. As I managed to get back up the beach and readjust my clothing, I reached for my wallet to my horror it was not there. The beach goers were a big help trying to reach it as it floated away. It was now allowing the fishes to purchase fast food in abundance. We had been smart and my daughters small allowance was tucked away in the glove box and my husband had some squirreled away in his wallet safely tucked away in the gear bag. I had only plans to walk on the edge of the surf so what did I need to lock away my wallet for? so... here is what we learned that day: Surf is a lot harder than you remember or think. Salt water still tastes nasty The surf is alot harder and will suck your wallet, weight belt, breath and clothes away and off to the brinly deep keep everything locked away back at the room in a safe wear a wet suit to prevent sunburn, sand burn sand gets everywhere come back better prepared in a few weeks julie |
