Making Freinds thru diving

I don't know if it's just me, But I have a hard time making new freinds. I've lived here since '92 and have only one person as a freind.(which of course is a blessing by all accounts). But now with the nest empty and my freinds nest is full. I'm feeling a little lonely. I'm not really a shy person. It just seems that I'm not a very likeable type person. Any tips out there on how to become a more freindly type person with out being a fake.

why don't you try the scubadillos swamp divers or single divers (not as in relationship single).

I have a pretty hard time too. I have to force myself to try to get out. I will say I going to the dog park is a good outlet for me.

To have friends - be a friend.

Do things for other people because you want to do things for other people. Be open, honest, engaging, polite, respectful, non-judgemental and kind. Don't be opinionated.

Put others before yourself, without expectations, and friendships will happen.

I would suggest finding out what hobbies you can focus on that involve others (scuba is good, any others?) and then actively being open to conversation/etc.
For example, when you move into a new area and your a scuba diver... join the local community and then even if you might not be enthusiastic about it, go to one of their meet and greets, go to several of them.

Finding people who share a similar hobby as you greatly reduces the akward (what do we talk about) in any relationship, friends included.

Something I've noticed with people who are a little gun shy around people is they don't know what to say, so they say nothing. I would actually suggest against that. A little sales tip here, people love talking about themselves.

Go into the social club, and ask discovery questions to the people who you speak with. (What do you do? Where is a good place for...).

Stay away from close-ended questions/answers. Close-ended questions/answers are those that have no continuous question/answer associated with them. For example: Yes, No, Blue, etc.

Ask questions that have no single word or small sentence answers and make sure you answer in like, it helps people feel more comfortable once the vocal juices start flowing.

Next time ST has a function, join them. You might also consider signing up for one of their trips where you can spend time with a bunch of other divers doing what divers love to do..........dive!

I know how you feel i am a very quiet person. I don't like talking about myself unless it is about diving. Going on a dive trip sounds like it would be a good way to meet and make new friends. Be open and honest.

DiverDan,

Come meet the ScubaDillos during our monthly meeting the first Thursday (4 October). The social hour begins at 6:30, the meeting begins at 7:30. Come for dinner, fellowship, and diving. Our speaker is from Utopia Dive Village.

Our web-site provides more information and directions to our meeting place, Midway Point Restaurant, on Midway, one block south of LBJ.

Let me know you're coming. The first beer is on me.
