My wife and I both dive long hoses and wouldn't have it any other way. It's what she was trained on, and I've been diving one for the past three years or so. I find the idea of the bungee'd octo and the long hose to donate the primary an excellent idea. This way the person who needs it most gets a known good, working regulator. And there's no searching for my octo, since it's around my neck. I haven't had any issues with managing the hose, both before and after I got the canister light that many people tuck the hose behind. I'd recommend it. But if you think about the long hose, you might want to consider the whole hogarthian system of diving. Many of the ideas make a lot of sense.

I work at my LDS when I'm on breaks from school (damn college education...), and I'd eventually like to DM. The owner just about FREAKED (not in a bad way) when he had a student in AOW with a BP/W and a long-hose configuration. I'd like to DM some day for the shop. I went home for the weekend, and stopped in the store to say hello, and he was very excited to talk to me about this guy...(he said "gooey" for GUE lol). I'd told him about GUE, DIR, and hog rigs before, but he wasn't very interested. I'll see what it's like, I hope I don't have to switch back later (I guess it wouldn't be too bad for pool sessions).
