DAN?

I know it's 'Diver's Alert Network', but what is it? What does it give/provide the diver? Membership dues, etc?

I probably can't do justice to everything they provide, so:

About DAN Divers Alert Network - a lifeline for the scuba diving industry

But basically they provide medical research and consultations for diving related injuries and problems. They also offer insurance.

Understand even if you are NOT a DAN member, they offer medical consultative services for divers and their physicians.

True, however the membership dues they collect each year are so that these services are available. I look at it as a small investment in my safety as well as the safety of others.

DAN does research on diving safety and loads of medical issues relating to divers. They provide an excellent consulting service where you can email or call a medic and get really good info on almost any medical conditions. I talked to them before I started diving and they gave me such good info that I joined the same day. My husband recently called because he was getting bloody noses after diving, and they helped him solve that issue. Even if you never need the services, your membership fee is going to a really good cause--research to make diving safer. It's well worth the money.

Great resource for medical diving related questions and emergencies.

DAN diving insurance, or similar (IMO) is an absolute must-have.

If I get bent, or otherwise hurt, hosed up, Fubar, name your diving injury here,

CALL DAN! Do not hesitate, not one second.

They have the in depth diving medical knowledge to help.

Read their web site and the history of DAN.

Dan basic membership also has some interesting family insurance benefits. If you have any kind of medical emergency over 50 miles from home, they provide transport.

IMO DAN should be something every diver uses. For the $100 per year (premium) you get coverage for Dive related injuries that many insurance carriers don't cover.

DAN also provides a lot of medical support for divers, and statistics about diving. No other agency in the world fills that niche.
