Cool There I was at 60'...

Some of the other threads got me thinking-though I be a but a humble "Tadpole" in forum of "Groupers"

Pufferfish recently started a thread about what not so smart things we've done and yet survived. So how about a "There I was.." thread?

One of my best was when I was diving Baja, down about 60' getting ready to ascend when both myself and my buddy are suddenly in a very large shadow. I look up and see that we are about 20' below a blue whale! Now I'm totally excited about being this close to a critter that I never thought I'd see in person much less be this close to it in it's realm. My buddy who was a very new diver (three dives past his open water dives-all on this trip). Talk about a paniced look in his eyes!!! He at first thought it was a great white.

The worst thing: I have a camera with me but I don't take a picture because I'm am totally ovewhelmed by the size of this thing. The neatest thing was that it could have made a big sweep with it's tail and hit us but instead of the slow ryhtmic motion, it did a few half-donward flips until it was by us.

The guys on the boat told us it surfaced only 100' from the boat and they got a few picts.

That same trip we also saw a very large Manta just leasurely swimming around a cove as well as the biggest damned hammerhead you'ld never want to be in the water with.

Okay, Next!!!

So there i was on the edge of a boat in the middle of the ocean anchored 60ft above the bottom, wearing scuba gear for the first time in my life when my instructor inflated my bcd, told me to look foreword, and jump and he gave me a little shove.

So after 0 minutes of confined water time i was 60 ft under with this guy i had just met and barely talked to (engines were too loud).

Then he left me with a DM in training to surface and get some Discover scuba people.

and of course i have another one. he didnt show up the next day so i was told that i was "done" with my OW

So there i was on my 4th dive ever when i hit the bottom after descending and i look at my SPG and notice its at 400PSI
hum, they sent me down with an empty tank.
XD

lets just say im not diving with those guys again.

hey, come on now, i didn't know any better

i didn't realize just how dangerous that was until after i got home from the trip and started reading scuba board religiously.

when it was actually happening i thought thats how it normally went.
so i cant be crazy for doing it if i thought it was normal.

now other stuff ive done can be called crazy...but lets not get into that.

That just goes to show you how importaint pre-dive checks are, no matter who you're diving with or whatever the situation/condition is.

well i know that now, and i check everything on my own rig myself once before i enter the water and again before i start to descend.

im not big on buddy checks, as i prefer to check myself so i know its my fault if i screw up, but i still go over OOA procedures with my buddy (i dive a 5ft with an octo inflater) and show the the weight release handle (zeagle ripcord)

so over all, it happened once and wont again, unless i know about it
or something i or my buddy wouldnt have been able to control happens.

Wow. I always check my gear, but I will check it even more closely now...including my buddy!

WOW! You be very lucky! Hope you went and bought some lottery tickets when you got home. Strongly recommend finding and taking another course. If the level of instruction was that low--you need another course--even if you have survived your first 30 dives.

Ok..so I am diving with 2 insta-buddies, doing my first drift dive and I for some reason have the reel with flag and float... no problem

We are drifting along nicely at around 40fsw when it is obvious the surface has become rather choppy, my two insta buddies are within 10fto no big deal. I roll on my back as I see a big shadow over me....it's the boat ...ok when I roll back I don't realize it but the rope from the float is wrapped around the loose end of my weight belt.. When do I notice it, well when one of those swells on the surface yanks the reel, and releases my weight belt........UGH!

So I am now stopped at 40' with reel in one hand my weight belt and tangle rope in the other....and NOT INSTA BUddies

Un-tangling the rope then releasing most of the rope for slack clipping it to my bcd then putting my weight belt on in mid water was nice to practice but I would prefer a buddy to be standing by just in case
