I use a 50/50 mix of rubbing alcohol and white vinegar. (To get water out - not for swimmer's ear.)

The 50/50 rubbing alcohol/vinegar is a good one. I have used a 1/3rubbing alcohol (pay the extra $ .20 for the 90%) 1/3 white vinegar and 1/3 glycerin (get it from your favorite pharmacist)

What I would NOT, repeat NOT use is Hydrogen Peroxide. A few ENT's I know have said that if you use H2O2 in your ears, you are garaunteed to get an ear infection.

And don't put anything in your ear smaller than your elbow (ENT's words, not mine)

that's weird.... I've used hydrogen peroxide in my ears since I was a little kid to remove ear wax buildup and such... Not often, mind you, but once a week when swimming, and less when not...

the general rule I've always heard is to not use it frequently, but its not because the hydrogen peroxide is bad for you, it's because some ear wax is beneficial (kinda like nose hairs)...

just a FYI as well, all of the ear drying drops you can buy at the store are just bottled 90-95% alcohol... much cheaper to buy normal rubbing alcohol...

I made that same statement to the ENTs and they stood by their answer. I like you have literally gallons of H2O2 poured in my ears to soften ear wax and never had a problem, but what can I say.

Maybe I should soften my NOT, huh?

If you can't remember swimmers ear (a bad case atleast), you haven't had it

hmm...i now have a mental image of someone trying to shove their elbow into the side of their head...ha!

i always buy the "swimmer's ear" brand drops for extracting water...if that's not available i just use straight rubbing alcohol...seems to work for me!
