navy
I went to my LDS yesterday and started up small chat with the owner. He was telling me that sometimes EXPERIENCED navy divers will come in and show a military ID. He said that he cant rent them any equipment because the military doesnt cert through an agency.
I have heard that the military does this and makes it impossible to find a job in the civi world where degrees and certs are expected. Not just diving but other MOS's |

First, the navy is a certification agency, it's just one that your LDS' insurance company doesn't list on his coverage so he doesn't want to expose himself to any liability.
Second, yes, that's true. However, you'll find that that doesn't stop military people from succeeding in the civilian world once they get out. Oddly enough, the military training on always obtaining one's objective seems to come into play. |

Being a navy diver doesn't necessarily make it difficult to find a job on the open market once you get out. In fact, the navy divers are highly coveted by the commercial hard hat diving community.
By virtue of my navy career, I have nearly a bachelors degree in business managment. All the various courses I have taken through the navy earn college credit. And depending on the job someone did in the navy-or the military for that matter makes them highly marketable-especially in the IT, Aviation, diving and managment sectors. |

I think all the services' training now counts as college credit (I know the AF and Navy does, don't know anyone in the other two to ask) and even when it doesn't employers know that you were well trained in the areas you recieved training in. So yes military experience goes a LONG way in getting a job in the civilian world (especially if you move into civil service jobs or corporations that have a military preference policy).

It is an idiotic stance by the scuba industry to not honor a military certification. They receive 10 time the training a PADI AOW diver receives.
ThA large percentage of airline pilots started with military training. The airlines would much rather hire a military trained and experienced pilot. When I started my first job after military service I got a higher starting salary because of my military experience. |

And as a Naui Course Director, I can give anyone credit for previous experience - whether a card was issued or not... So if I look over their training and they have done everything necessary to be a divemaster, I can just do some skills with them and have them take a test, and credit them for the number of dives, different diving environments, etc. Basically a weekend cross over.

Likely factor here is that a military ID is a military ID is a military ID. Name, rate/rank, some other details, but absolutely nothing about a persons job or qualifications. Looking at mine, you wouldn't know if I was a Yeoman that processed leave chits in a cubicle all day, or a Boatswain's Mate that works on Motor Lifeboats all day. (Which is, in fact, what I do)
