Arrow Eye Fi - World's first wireless memory card!

Has anyone read any reports or used/tried this product yet? Looking for info and opinions.

Yes, there really is Wi-Fi inside that tiny little card. We think itís going to change the way people take, save and share photos.
All Eye-Fi Cards come with everything needed to make it simple to set up and connect to your home Wi-Fi network. After that, pop the card into your digital camera and start capturing memories. It stores pictures like a regular SD card no matter where you are, and uploads automatically as soon as you return to your wireless network. All you have to do is turn the camera on.

If I'm close enough to my computer to upload wirelessly, I'm close enough to put an SD card in the reader. If that Eye-fi is not encrypted, then you may broadcast to any wi-fi computer nearby. I want to keep my pr0n to myself.

I'd prefer to just download as normal for the same reason that Vercingetorix stated. Maybe I'd consider it if it was selective on download.

    Thanks,

check out this thread I started about them about 6 months ago on Scubaboard. I pretty much asked the same question you did.

Wireless (802.11g) SD Memory card? Anyone using them? - ScubaBoard

i really see the major camera makers, like Cannon, Nikon, etc starting to include wireless technology (802.11g) in their cameras and you being able to set up networks in the MENU screen on the camera. I'm surprised it's not here now considering that you can already get connectivity like that in the iPHONE.

As for the above concern about it transmitting to another computer... you have to physically take the card and put it in their USB reader to set it up for a network. any time you change networks, you have to do the same thing again. kinda a pain. so although anything is possible in getting your pics off the wireless net, it's likely avoidable. so I think your porn is safe.

I can see 1 advantage and 1 disadvantage to a wireless card.

The advantage is not having to open your housing to upload your shots that way keeping the seal in tact.

The disadvantage would be a reduction in battery life which would require opening the case for charging or swapping the batteries.
If manufacturers would use a charging system that would work within the watertight case then the wireless would be more advantagious.
Opinions are like gas... We're all entitled to some but people appreciate you keeping it to yourself if it stinks!

Thanks! First time I have come across this and wanted to see what people thought. I can see this developing into something useful but for now I will stick with what I have.

It will be interesting to see how this is accepted and where it goes.......

I don't see a real value in it, and I see it draining the camera batteries faster.

The geek in me likes that it's been done, but the realist in me won't bite.

And wireless transfer is way slower than a direct connection.

Edit: And eek, I sure hope you have a secure home network and have changed the default network name. If you have a default network name (like "linksys") and no password, anytime you pass a similar network, that card is going to connect and try to transfer your photos!

I was talking to a guy that shoots pro for international tenis matches and they all use wireless connections to upload their shots to their media HUB. Then again the gear he was using was alot of money.

Nikon have brough out their own wireless connection for the D3 and D300 Nikon UK - Wireless Transmitter WT-4

Its not the same as the wireless SD card but It looks like it will be popular in the near future for those taking vast amounts of photos.

Battery consumption and people hacking into your transfer would be my biggest fear. I will stick with the ever increase memory card sizes 8gig then 16gig and now 32gig.......next week 64 gig.

I have used these professionaly, they are encripted. That said even when you are shooting hundreds or thousands of frames they are not always fesibal due to rf interferiance. But if you are just looking for a way to send through a houseing they would work. But they probialy would not transmit through water.
