    Balmorhea Sep 21st-23rd

The wife and I are finally going to make the trek to Balmorhea... we've been wanting to go for a while, and we finally got it crammed into our schedule...

Thinking about camping and all... We'll see what the weather is supposed to be like...

Went a few years back in late March and got hit with a freak cold front. The air temp dropped to about 37 degrees but the water was great! We had the whole pool to ourselves it was pretty cool. Ended up staying at the motel, rather than camping due to the cold.

Make time to go up to the MacDonald Observatory for one of the star partys at night, if you can. It was really amazing!

Thanks for the heads up, I rearranged our trip by a day to make it there on that tuesday...

Sounds cool, and it's been years since I've been to an observatory...

The 22nd is a new moon, so you should get some terrific star gazing ... and hopefully you won't have snow on the ground like we did!

Plus, you're going during the week for most of it. That'll make a big difference with the number of people around you. It's become very popular with out-of-staters for OW.

Your suggestion was what prompted us to go during the week... Since we changed the dates to 22nd-24th, I figure we'll get there around 2 or 3, get camp set up, check out the grounds, maybe swim/freedive a little, then maybe do a night dive... Spend some time in the water tuesday morning too, then do the observatory that night... Should be low traffic...

Be the first folks in the water...otherwise, you won't be able to see jack due to all the "newbies" silting the place up! Last time I was out there in April this year, we had about 20 classes of OW and Jr. OW classes from NM and OK, too. The nearby Universities that offer scuba may also have classes out there...yes, during the week.

Scott and I were in the water by about 8:30am, but went from there...and got in 4 dives in the course of one day (2 AM and 2 PM)...checking out the wildlife/vegetation. And you know I took some photos, as well...

I like it out there, but definitely better to ONLY dive in the mornings. I've heard night dives can be arranged, and they are good too, since the silt has had time to wash out thanks to the fast flowing spring.
