It is just a short hop across the border to Baja from Alta California.

It is a little unnerving, traveling down HWY 1 and being stopped at check points with the kids in the backseat and having the vehicle searched by soldiers with shoulder slung machine guns. I have gotten somewhat use to it at some airports in Europe and for a short period in the US. I have never had my belongings opened and gone through at these checkpoints just looking. Some are manned by a machine gunner sitting on a 50 cal. What do they suspect. An armed vehicle trying to run the check point? I do love the beaches and the people though. It is too bad for the communities and people that depend on the tourist industry.

I started diving and camping in Baja in 1980, my friends and I drive would down to the Mulege area a couple of times a year camp on the beach and dive for a week at a time. Even durning those years I never felt comfortable in the border towns, the army check points were in annoyance but they never really bothered me, usually cost us a couple cokes or cans of beer. But with all the recent shooting, kidnappings etc. I don't go any more , really great beauty in that country but currently worth the chance of something happening

I checked out your site and you have some wonderful traveling info. Thanks for sharing this info. Baja California is the twelfth largest state by area in Mexico. Its geography ranges from beaches to forests and deserts. The backbone of the state is the Sierra de Baja California.

Great advice for Key West Travel Deals

Baja is nice. I made the trip down there in January of this year driving 1000 miles from California to Cabo San Lucas to move some furniture. It's not bad if you keep the driving during the day. Definitely a fun trip.

Last dives I did in the sea of Cortez were from the mainland side-Kino Bay with trips out to Tiburon, Turner and San Estaban(?) We went through a couple of check points near the border and were then hassle free. But, like others, this was 20 plus years ago.

I once saved a man in Wichita just to watch him dive...(inventor)
