Why did you decide to start solo diving?

Why did you decide to start solo diving? How did you know you was ready to venture out on your own?

I started solo diving from a lack of active buddies (when you got to dive you just got to dive).

I have always been very comfortable in the water and good with navigation so deciding to go solo was no big deal for me but i did do my first solo dive in about 10' to 15' of water and worked deeper over time.

I started solo diving after I found that there is a large, local lake (Lake Jocassee, SC) with an area set aside for shore-diving. I don't need a boat, don't need to make reservations, don't need to do anything except get air on the way in, pay $2 for parking, and get in the water.

I also have a dive-buddy but I have more free time than he does.

I will solo dive at a local lake just to get wet..
I know the lake quite well - I know my limits and I know what to do in any situation that goes wrong..
I know my gear, I know myself..Ive been diving for quite some time and I am confident I can handle any situation that comes up smartly and safely

I also started solo diving becuase I had no local buddies to dive with. I've always been very comfortable in water, and confident in my diving. I expect my solo-ing to drop off a lot now though. I just succeeded in growing my first dive buddy. She did her final cert dive this weekend. I'm sure I'll always do the occasional solo, but not as often.

I did that once and after about 4 or 5 dives after her OW she just had no interest in going. But now she is growing my next dive buddy I am counting down the years

I just did my first solo diving last weekend. I spent a lot of time mentally planing what i was doing an going to do. It all went well even tho the water was freezing(8oC if that means anything to you) and low viz (4-12ft). I caught my first lobsters/crayfish which was nice. Honestly i fully enjoyed the feeling of being so alone and being fully responsible for myself.

I do understand I am putting myself at risk doing this but in all honesty i feel safer alone than with some of the rent-a-buddys ive been put with.

This is exactly what I would love to have a local place to just go and get wet to practice ........... That would be a reason to go solo.

I just enjoy it, I like being on my own timetable. Even if I had lots of buddies to choose from my preference would be to go solo.

I dive a lot with classes and that can get to be a handful. I go solo from time to time to remember why I love diving.

I go solo when my buddies are not available. 30 ft max and always at a location I have been to before.
