OMS SMB - will not inflate, sometimes

Ok, I've got the OMS SMB (open bottom with baffle). The baffle is made of clear plastic. Sometimes it will not inflate.

    Scenerio:
I put air into the bottom and it will not go up through the baffle. I have even held the bottom closed and squeezed, I can not force the air up through the baffle.

So what do you do? You screw with it on the way to the surface. I have jammed my finger as far up the baffle as possible. That made it start working. I have taken off the OPV to look inside. It suddenly started working.

    This problem comes and goes.

The first time was after the SMB had sat unused for a couple of weeks. I assumed that the plastic was stuck together (thus the finger up the hole technique)

It happened again just a few weeks later on dive #3. It had worked flawlessly on the first 2 dives, that morning. This time I opened the OPV to look inside. (the end of the baffle is just an inch above the OPV). It suddenly started working. I replaced the OPV, Inflated, and sent it up.

It does not appear that the baffle is folded over, or otherwise obstructed.

My question is...has anybody else experienced this?

Consider it's feelings, talk to it, show interest. Maybe a bottle of wine?

A buddy of mine had similar problems with a Carter Bag. He butchered the baffle so it inflated all the time, but dump gas when it fell over.

Never did identify the cause of the problem.

    May some silicone spray?

I know mine tends to stick occasionally so I poke my finger in there as a part of the routine prep. I suspect you could try a little silicon or something the prevent the sticking.

    I have the answer!

What is happening is that the SMB is getting too compressed (>100 fsw). This time when it would not inflate, I pulled the dump valve (OPV) and let it equalize. As soon as I did that, the air that was below the baffle burped up into the SMB.

I would not have thought that this was possible. But seeing, is believing.

    Another great"tip"!
(somebody here should pull all these "tips" into forum and broken down into sub forums.)
