Who has dove in Crete, Greece?

My husband and I are living in Greece. I am new at diving and taking open water class. I like diving here but the med is really fished out and there are not any wreck dives to find. The experience is great though I plan to do more divind when I get back to the states.

At least it is warm. And I'm sure you can find something to look at

    Not Crete, but Close

I spent Summer 03 working/diving in Bodrum, Turkey, on the other side of the Aegean from you. Like you say, not much fish, but the geological formations caused by the earthquakes make for interesting diving. Water temp in May was upper 50's, warming to upper 70's by August. But you're so close to the Red Sea that you should plan a trip down there before you return to the States. Have fun.

Hey Kalokairi (summer)! Are you Greek originally, or are you US and in the military (but speaking Greek)?

There's some fish around Malta, but yeah, between dynamite fishing and the Aswan Dam cutting off the flow of nutrients to the Eastern Med, the fish stocks have dropped. There won't be any tuna left there within our lifetime.

But it's a fabulous, fabulous place - my favorite in the world. Beautiful people and incredible food.

Funny to run into this post. I have a slight interest in following the talk here as Crete is where I began my dive career---39 years ago. Sept 10, 1969 to be exact. I was in the US~Airforce and stationed there at Iraklion Air Base.

I don't really remember what the diving was like and any input would be appreciated. I think it was mostly iron stone. I Remember a lot of sea urchins, octopuses, and star fish. I had some friend and we dove our brains out. I got in 156 dives my first year of diving.

I see the air base is still there, but the communications sight where I worked is now a Nato radar station.

Sorry for the hijack, but this really sttruck my interest.

But if you ever get a chance I recommend diving in Puerto Morales. It has the best wreck dive in Mexico. Wet Set Water Adventures of Mexico..the best little PADI dive center in the Mexican Caribbean tell'em James sent ya.

If you are in to wrecks and can get a cheap flight to Cyprus, there is a huge ferry wreck called the Zenobia right off the coast of Larnaca.
