    Egypt 2010- sights & diving

We're looking at a trip in Oct 2010. Will start out with a land tour of Cairo, Luxor, Aswan, nile cruise. Plus a week of diving in Sharm or Dahab or split the two. Will post more when things firm up

Excellent. I'm thinking about Egypt & the Red Sea in 2011. But the Middle East scares me ... especially if it was me (female) and another girl traveling alone. I'll stay tuned.

I have been to alot of places in my life and Cairo is a hard place to spend alot of time IMHO... Did not dive but I did like Sharm El Sheich but very short stay (2 days). Cairo was a week and as bad as it may sound; my advice to others is, If you want to go and see the Pyramids, go and spend a day and get the hell out...! Very tough to spend any time at unless your in a upscale hotel and never leave. I know it sounds bad but it is a tough area to spend time at.

To give you some perspective, I spent almost a year in Israel and loved it (that how I got to Egypt...) Flew to Cairo with my wife and caught a cab to Sharm El Sheich... Spent several months in India. Dirt poor like Egypt but I had a really great time their!!!

I would go back to Israel, India, and maybe Egypt but I would think long and hard before I went back to Cairo... (actually, after re-reading this; I would not go back to Cairo but I would go to other places to include Sharm for a second time)

I am sure some will chime in on Cairo's side and maybe I caught it at a bad time or maybe I was just not in the mood for it. I would offer this, I would advise friends to spend a day or two in Cairo and then head off to other parts of Egypt as I am sure there are some wonderful places (Sharm) to spend time at...

Regardless of what I say, I hope you go and have a blast!!! Oh, Apple smokes real good in the hookahs!!!

Sorry to hear you had a bad time in cairo. it is a large city but has many things to offer besides the pyramids. This will be trip #7 to egypt. I'll admit cairo is my least favorite city. Dahab diving puts Sharm to shame in my book. but everyone has thier favorites.
Egypt as a whole is hard for independant travel and thats why we have a guide to help.

Its not that I had a bad time, I felt it didn't offer much to be "Cairo"...! We did the Museum and Mosque along with the cemetery of the dead (I believe that's the correct name) and all the tourist stuff as we did have a guide for the week...

I guess what it boils down to, other than the pyramids... Nothing really sticks out as found memory's... Funny, I was talking to a guy here at CoCo View yesterday; he loved Cairo!!! Were all different and different taste, Boring world IF we were all the same...

Please keep this in mind... I was not busting on Egypt as a whole as I loved Sharm... as I am sure there are many other great places... I just did not care for Cairo... But then again; who the hell am I? Just another individual!!! Best to you and your travles and that I truly mean!!!

And please trust me on this... I hope I have not gotten your thread off track!!!

PS I will have to keep Dahab in mind as I would love to dive the Red Sea infact; if Duhab is just south of Isreal on the way to Sharm, then I shared a cab with some others heading there from Allot Isreal!

We have the land part worked out I've included here. The cost are around 4000 airfare included.
We haven't decide on the dive site afterwards. It will be sharm or dahab, depending on where the divers want to go. Both are great.

I feel the same way, but a young woman from my dive club went, and she did not go with a group (not sure if she went alone or with another female friend)

Something I am hoping to do maybe 2012, before we world ends
    ;-)

I did the Nile cruise a few years ago....worth every minute and $...but the diving in Sharm....well saw more divers than fish....colorful corals though.

Yep, Nile Cruises are wonderful. We're going back for our third, this time down south on Lake Nasser. If you can stand the heat - go in the hottest summer months - the crowds are minimal then. August is our favorite time to go. Cairo is worth seeing for the Giza Plateau / Sakhara (pyramids), and the museum. The Museum's King Tut room alone puts the traveling King Tut exhibit in the US to shame. I try to spend a couple days at the museum in Cairo every time we go. Luxor (Thebes) is wonderful, and I enjoy spending a fair amount of time there.
The people are friendly and gracious, just be aware that many are desperately poor, so people are always trying to sell you something at the various sights. We feel very safe there. Brought our teenage daughters with us and was never concerned about our safety.

bax767 glad to hear from anothe rEgypt traveller. We did lake Nassar a few years back and the only thing I thought was impessive was Abel Simbol from the lake. The other stops were just okay. If you get a chance dive in Dahab, less people & lots more fish than Sharm. We've never tried Hurgada. Maybe next time. We had to cancel our fall trip this year. Trying to get it together for march or april.'Have a good time.
