Thread: Compressor Owners ... PLEASE!

    Compressor Owners ... PLEASE!

I know that almost everybody here gets great air from Larry. But for those of you that are home compressor owners .... PLEASE CHANGE YOUR OIL REGULARLY!!!

It is the start of the season for some "part time" divers and I can't tell you how many parts I am selling because the compressor owners haven't changed their oil before putting it away for the season.

And while we are at it, make sure that your filters are fresh. Stinky air does no one any good.

OK ... On with your day!

    compressors

    Thanks for the heads up.

I spent a few hours last week changing my oil, filters, and general cleaning of the compressor and the area around it.

I may be a little anal about my oil, but I change it every 20 hours the compressor is run. I look at it like an auto oil change, its much cheaper to change the oil rather than a piston.

20 hours!!!! That's great! I will bet your compressor will run forever with care like that.

I thought I was anal changing at 25 hours on the little guys and 80 hours on the big ones.

You are right ... an oil change is about $10 while a new 4th stage piston and cylinder runs about $250!

What are your prices like on compressors?

New compressors start at around three thousand and go up from there. The most popular compressors that you can toss in the trunk of your car are under $3400. The most popular home compressor with automatic drains, auto shutdown is around $8000.

If it is a deal you are looking for, then there are LOTS of super deals on used compressors out there. But be careful because there are a lot of stinkers out there as well.

Some day I hope to have my own compressor at home. Unfortunately, there are about a thousand other things I really need before that.

    oil change intervals
i have read a bit on this , my manual said change annually or every 500 hrs

at first i started changing my oil every 250 hrs which i thought was really good .

now im changing my oil every 100 hrs.
so do you suggest changing my oil even more often

    Ps im running a LW100 100litre / Min 3.5 cfm

hey if it extends my compressor life im happy to change my oil every 50 or even 25 hrs . its not a big expense compared to a compressor rebuild .

also do you have any thoughts about setting up a extra filter chamber , the pre made ones are like 1k or the make your own ones spoken about in the oxygen hackers handbook use hydraulic accumulators which im unable to source in Australia ??????

    Regards

Maybe I'm missing something, but, the oil we buy for our compressor is a lot more than $10 per oil change...

And if we changed the oil every 80 hours, we would be changing it every 15-20 days or so...

That being said, our compressor runs very cool, never outputs more than 3300 psi, and our air checks come back beautifully...

home compressor, shop compressor, the only difference is the size... I'm not the one purchasing the oil, but I'd like to say it costs around $10 / quart or more...
