When a location requires you to display a "Diver Down" marker while diving....
Do they refer to something like THIS

Im a newb, so sorry for the question.
Im just not sure if you "tow" a SMB or not or if its just for safety stop and pickups

The second one would meet the requirements where I live.

It varies from state to state so you have to check local laws.

Here in Florida, you have 2 options.
    1. You must fly a diver down flag from your vessel (Minimum 20" x 24"). Note: the diver must stay withing 300' of the flag in open water (100' in inland water).

    or

    2. You must tow a personal dive flag (minimu 12" x 12").

It's the second one, red with white diagonal stripe. Here's a link to some wiki information on the flag: Diver down flag - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Definitely the second one. Though in the midwest, I'm inclined to believe that it means: "Yo dude, check it out! A moving turning bouy!"

    Don't forgetthe Alpha Flag:

The U.S. Coast Guard spells out the federal regulation for its use in Rule 27e - Vessel Engaged in Diving Operations:
Whenever the size of a vessel engaged in diving operations makes it impracticable to exhibit all lights and shapes prescribed in paragraph (d) of this Rule [i.e. most civilian vessels], the following shall be exhibited:

Three all-round lights in a vertical line where they can best be seen. The highest and lowest of these lights shall be red and the middle light shall be white; a rigid replica of the International Code flag "A" not less than 1 meter in height. Measures shall be taken to ensure its all-round visibility.
