Why dive buddies don't dive down together?

We were taught to dive down one at a time, with the person on top counting when the person down should be coming up. But it seems to me it would make more sense for free-diving buddies to dive down and up together, maybe the "spotter" a few seconds behind.... My logic is, if the "spotter" sees any trouble, he/she can lend a hand right away and that the first diver never leaves sight. What is your opinion? What are the advantages of diving down one at a time?

Not a free diver, but did a lot of snorkeling way back when. I would imagine since one of the biggest hazards is shallow water black out, having a fairly well ozygenated diver on the srface can quickly come down and save you if it happens. You're idea sound good too, but what happens if the "spotter" has problems? The buddy is not gong to have any reserves of oxygen to come back and help the spotter.

    Just my $.02.

I once saved a man in Wichita just to watch him dive...(inventor)

Due to our limited visibility, the "one up, one down" will not necessarily work. For instance, you go out with a couple of friends. If the visibility is not good, when your buddies dive down you have no idea in which direction or how long down. I tend to surface within 25' of my board or kayak, but most of my buddies no telling. In general, they hunt away from their float and can get over 50yds away.

The shallower depths that many of us dive in NorCal compared to SoCal, shallow water blackout may not be as great a factor.
