    VT3 vs. Suunto Vytech DS

Can anyone tell me the difference between these two computers? Is there something major, other then the name, that causes the $600 difference in price?

Yes, it's missing the transmitter and also the download software and cables. It's also sized differently and uses a different diving algorithm. From reading the specs it's also missing a few bell's and whistles.

The VT3 has a fair amount of bell and whistles. The transmitter is a huge part of the cost. Be care where you buy the your computer make sure that the transmitter is part of the package, no sense in buying AI without the transmitter. I have a VT3 and love it. I think it is a good value.

You can buy a VT3 without transmitter and it's quite a bit cheaper if you do it that way, similar to the deal here except you still get the download cable and software.

Both of these computers have an option of a transmitter. the price is quite similar, i don't understand how you came up with 600 difference. Suunto's software is downloadable from their website. USB cable can be purchased for ~$40 on eBay or do-it-yourself (check scubaboard for recipe) if you are electronics savvy. They are both top of the line dive computers emplying different algorhythms. ST does not sell Suunto due to the manufacturer's policies. get it at divetank.com (LP also sells these) if you decide to go with Suunto.

I loved my suuntu until I did some diving where it's ulta-conservatism screwed me out of alot of bottom time...

So get the VT3 - with or without the transmitter it's still a better computer.

the vt3 is $900 on scubatoys with transmitter, which is probably the best option.

Suunto are more conservative than Aeris. I used to dive with a Suunto and now dive with the Aeris VT3 which I prefer, I also like the fact that the display is bigger and the menu navigation easier. However you can't go wrong with either of them, both are strong computers.
