Al. I prefer steel for BG and Al for deco and stages.

I use aluminum tanks for ponies. 19cu ft and 30 cu ft work well fro me.

I'd assume Al would be much easier and cheaper to find than steel.

I find aluminum tanks preferable for stage/pony/deco use due to the bouancy characteristics and the lower prices. Something in the 30cf or 40cf size makes an excellent choice for a pony for a few reasons. Both hold enough gas to resolve most recreational situations, there is not a huge price difference between those tanks and smaller ones, both are easy to sling (if you go that route), both give you a tank you can use down the road if you one day decide to do tech diving. As with most things YMMV.

AL is the way to go. You want to be as close to neutral with or without the tank and since the tank will always be full (as a pony bottle) you will want the buoyancy characteristics of a full AL rather than a steel. Also agree better to sling than attach. You can hand it off in an emergency and learn the skills of slinging a tank for Tech.

I believe that both can work just fine and depending on if you buy new or used sometimes you can get a good deal. AL is a good choice and I would go with at least 30 and even look at 40. I have a 30 AL and a 40 steel. I found a wonderful deal on my steel and got it with the rigging strap and in perfect condition for less than a new AL tank and is only two years old. It trims out good also.
The best thing I see about the steel tanks is the reduction in weight as they are typically negative even when empty. If yo uare carrying a lot of weight then getting rid of weight is a plus. The bigger you are this is a factor and I speak from experience. The downside is if you hand it off then you have to know how the weight reduction will affect trim.
Slinging is the best way im my opinion. I have done doth ways and slinging to me is easier. the easiet way is to play with and see what works the best. No one system will work the best for everyone.
I have used a pony bottle since day one and dont leave home without it. To me it is a safe way to be sure I have a redundant air supply. My buddy may not be their for me. I have been in burning buildings and have firefighters leave the line and the building and be alone. Just as with that and diving I depend on myself. I do not know how a buddy will react in a time of stress and be up to the challenge. It is not something you can train for.
Lets see, to dive or not to dive? Well that is a stupid question, DIVE, DIVE, DIVE, and then DIVE some more as long as it is safe!!!!!

I would go with the 40cuft. It's the same diameter and just a few inches longer. You never notice the extra few inches.

Tim, like you, I am tall. I use an AL 40 and wouldn't hesitate to recommend the same.
