    Turtle Hatch Out Video

This is what I am seeing at night. I just ordered an infra red camera so hopefully I will have my own photos one of these days!

In Broward Cty the hatchlings don't all head straight to the sea. Many disorient to street/building lights and we have to catch and bring them to the water's edge. Last night I was on a nest we were certain would hatch but nothing happened. Even so, sitting quietly in the dark watching the waves and an incredible lightening show in the distance was pretty cool. Sort of erases stress and worries in life.

Awesome video! I saw that down in Costa Rica - very very memorable =] It's too bad so many of them die before making it to the ocean or shortly thereafter =/

The normal hatch out is 49 days. The window when we watch the nests is approx 46-51 days. Last night's nest was on day 51; I thought for sure it would go but Mother Nature thought otherwise. Right now (Aug-Sept) is peak hatch out time so there are nests all along the beach that are in the hatch window. Broward Cty is divided into zones and volunteers are assigned based more or less on where we live.

Just FYI - there have been 95 counted/monitered nests in Broward this season. That is down from last year. I want to say last year was over 125, green and leatherbacks. We lost a lot of nests with the surge from Irene this week: 90% along one stretch of Fort Lauderdale beach Makes the ones we do save all that much more important.

My new infra red camera arrived today! Here is a photo of Irmy, taken in total darkness. Hopefully (if there's a hatch out) I'll have photos to post after my Friday night shift!

Bell & Howell night vision slim. It's nothing fancy. I'm there to rescue turtles, not be a tourist, so I just wanted something I could tuck in my pocket. I'll be out on Hollywood Beach tonight and tomorrow night ... stay tuned!
