    Highlander: Figure a lavacore and 5mil will equal a 6ml to 6.5 mil, not an 8. Snagel is right on that layering is good, but good fit is better. Make it an experiement of sorts, add the lavacore to your 5 mil and make succesively colder divers and see where you comfort zone ends. This will do two things: 1) you know the limits of your gear and 2) you dive more and we all know more diving is not only a ggod thing but a way to feed our addiction.

    The tag that comes with the LavaCore is it 1.5 mil and a standalone but when used in layers in equivalent to 2 to 3 additional mils of warmth. I have my 7 mil on ebay since my LavaCore and 5 mil is to cold I'm going to my dry suit.

    What about this?

    Is it common practice for divers to wear a shorty over a wetsuit if they need more warmth? As opposed to wearing a lavacore underneath? Are there distinct advantages of one over the other?
