    Advice for diving southern California?

Hi guys... Please bare with the new guy. New to this forum and to diving and am looking to make a budget trip to Californina (LA or San Diago)in March to go and do some diving. Can anybody give me some advice as far as charters and or destinations? Everything on the web can be a little overwelming. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

First welcome to the forum. I apologize, because I am just too far east to be able to give you advice on LA or San Diego, but I did want to welcome you to the forum. I understand being overwhelmed when trying to figure out dive travel on the web. There are many experienced divers on this forum who travel to diving locations on a frequent basis. I am sure you will get a good answer shortly.

There are a few charters that go out of SD and LA that go to Catalina and the Channel Islands.

Diving Scuba Vacation, Channel Islands, California has got good reviews in the past. There are some shops in the La Jolla area that have dives in La Jolla coe that are pretty good as well.

I once saved a man in Wichita just to watch him dive...(inventor)

My wife and I did two days of diving out of San Diego. We used Marissa Dive Boat. We did one day locally for three dives and one day we went to Coronado Islands in Mexico.

Although I have not dove SoCal in around 8 or 10 years as I am now spoiled with warm water. My suggestion would be Catalina and spend a nite or two. They have or had a couple of good dive ops with Scuba Luv and Catalina divers supply plus pretty good marine life....Just Cold water! you need to contact them first and see what days they are running boats. If you go to Catalina go out of San Pedro or Long beach...if you find a boat out of SD going there.....the water can be very rough.

From what I remember diving in La Jolla lots of sand and a sting ray or two...yawn...but if they have a site now that the black sea bass hang out that would be worth while or maybe the Yukon off PB.

The channel Islands was very good diving but I spent more time being seasick then underwater....waters can be rough.

    Hope this helps

I know this is slightly old, but I just saw it. I live and have grown up in So.Cal. (mostly Los Angeles, but also lived in Orange County for 8 years).

    Top places:
Catalina (you can take the Catalina Express boat to Avalon and dive by Casino Point - nice, nice area to dive!)
Dive off the coast of Laguna Beach (beach dives)
Boat dives (you can pick up a flyer or call a local Sports Chalet to see what they have when March gets a little closer)

Check out this site (it has some good information about dive sites in the area):
