Travel tips for heading to Cancun?

Does anybody have any travel tips for when I head to Cancun in this month?
Do I take my dive knife with me? Or leave it at home? (not sure if carrying a knife in mexico is illegal or not)

Can you drink mixed alcoholic beverages, I have heard not to drink the water unless its bottled. Mixed drinks have ice made of their water, or what about soft drinks, specifically fountain drinks.

We are staying at an all inclusive hotel there, so I am sure the water should be ok in drinks.

    Any tips are welcomed

We never took our dive knives, just didn't want any hassle. Did bring some shears and put in the BCD pocket.

We didn't and were told not to drink the water even at the resort out of the tap. All the soda we got was out of the can. We were told not to order drinks with ice, but you can't be in Mexico and not have a pina colada. Didn't have any issues. We were also told not to order any drinks with fruit in them because if they wash the fruit is is with tap water. Again, we didn't have any issues.

    Tips:

When you get to the airport, carry your bags. There will be plenty that will offer to carry them outside for you for a tip. It's not a long walk. You will be bugged by those trying to sell you something in the airport...walk right by them.

Highly recommend you get the private shuttle to your resort. If you are on the bus, it could be along ride having to stop at every resort. Private shuttles are usually set up when you make your trip reservations and don't cost much at all.

Spend a day on 5th Street in Playa Del Carmen....all the street vendors are there.

    Do a Cenote Dive.

Don't be in a hurry for anything, but the driving.

Bring cash with you for tipping purposes (DMs, etc.)

Do not be afraid to haggle if you are buying something.

If you don't see how it can be brought through Customs, it probably can't be--pass on that purchase.

Don't just think of it as a playground--people live there and there is a history. Learn a little about that history, and ask folks about the details of it; I've done this and you'd be amazed how showing a little genuine interest in the people brightens their day and yours as well.

Like the last post says " ask about the local stuff" I did in Cozuumel and found out some interesting history and was given serveral resturants to try. They were cheap and good and off the tourist beat. I've always tried to engage the locals about them and have found the response positive. After all you didn't go to Mexico to be in the US did you?

Hire a local taxi (make sure that he is recommended by your hotel) to take you on a tour. We have done this at Costa Rica, Puerto Aventuras and Cozumel. You get to see a whole lot more interesting things than a bus type tour, and it is not that expensive.

One misunderstanding that was settled locally to avoid "paperwork" and they never let you forget.

The officers were very helpful in working out a $olution.....
