I used to see Jupiter spearos with them, but now that you bring it up, I haven't seen one in while. Don't recall seeing any in the shops recently. I'll ask around.

I've seen them in use in Australia, and had one dive buddy go into the water with one on a shore dive we did on Elizabeth Reef by Cottesloe, WA.

Interesting thing about them (at least from diving in Oz) was that while there's a lot of folks who think they're a dandy idea, no one seems certain that they actually work on a consistent basis. When the rash of shark attacks hit recently in Oz, the Australian dive forums all blew up with one question that was never resolved: was the diver wearing a Shark Shield?

Now I know that there are some regular Oz divers who are members here--Smashee, care to put your two cents in?

Yeah--you learn to keep clear of that trailing wire when you dive with someone carrying one.

They're not that well-used around here. Plenty of places tried to sell them, but I've never seen one used around QLD, despite having a large bull-shark population.
Further South, as you head towards GWS country (VIC, TAS, SA) they're more popular, but still relatively rare amongst divers, and only slightly more common with surfers.

There's a few divers that swear by them, some of those diver's buddies swear at them. There's also a fair degree of scepticism about whether or not they work. I haven't seen anything from the coroner either about the guy who had his testimonials removed from the Shark-Shield website shortly after he died. Was he wearing one & if so, was it switched on? There's a lot of folks who would be *very* interested to know.

My take on them is that the expense, extra hassle and annoyance factor make them puts them on the wrong side of the cost/benefit equation. The risk of being attacked is very low and there's other gear I'd rather carry that makes more of a difference to my survival. Besides, carrying a camera seem to work very well at scaring sharks away. :-/

IMO, they're a bit like wearing a flame-retardent suit when driving. Pointless for driving to the shops, may be useful in more specialised areas.
Some franchises just never make it... CSI:Wagga Wagga was one of them.

so, i didn't slap the guy. but i did tell him to turn it off and asked him WTF it was. he told me a really cool story as to why he now uses it...

he dives off pompano beach and spears 3-4 times per week for the past decade or so (this was in 2006). he's used to sharks and never worried about them. until... he took a shot at a cobia and his placement was off. he got the fish, but it was bleeding - BAD. he hooped it and decided to turn the dive due to the blood. this is scary cuz, as most of you that have dove in FL know, he was drift diving. so the boat was going to have to come get him. he finishes his safesty stop, all the while on guardlooking for sharks. he surfaces and the boat is WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY far from him. he signals for the boat to come get him and feels a BUMP BUMP on his belt. he figures it's the cobia putting up one last fight. he looks back and it's a 10-12 bull shark eating the cobia OFF HIS HOOP. he ditched the hooped and basically waited, face in the water and gun pointed at the shark, until the boat came to get him.

he says he's never had another encounter after he got the shield. i'm thinking this may be why they are slow to sell. until you hae a life or death situation like that, maybe you aren't ready to shell out the $$$ for one of those things...

Considering that it took ten years or so to have the first encounter, I'm not surprised by that.

There's the thing, isn't it? Is it because of the shark shield, or just the law of averages?
