Key West Diving for a new Junior Diver

We are headed to Key West next fall. I have a newly certified 12 year old. The depth of the reefs (30-40) feet is very appealing to me as we won't feel like we are missing out on things that are deeper.

Does anyone have experience at Key West? Can you recomment a good dive op?

    Thanks!

We dive Key Largo and yes the lot really nice dives in the 20 to 35 foot range that would be great for your 12 year old and you can do some deeper dives like the Speagle Grove. I have never dove Key West but have been told that the main attraction is wreck diving and most of really deep.

Have not dove out of Key West. The one time we booked there (years ago) we got cancelled due to weather. We have done Looe Key which is about 25 miles out side of Key West. Is a really nice spur & groove reef system, which would be perfect for a new diver. Here's a list of Ops for the area. My only comment would be that the 1st one listed -Looe Key Reef Resort & Dive Center cancelled on us with about and hour & a half notice with no real apology and no offer to refer us elsewhere. I'm guessing since they run a big boat, if they don't hit a certain number, they just don't go out. Next time, we'll probably try one of the ops that take smaller groups. http://www.fla-keys.com

We stay in Marathon, which is 50 miles from Key West. Has some nice shallow reefs, and some good dive ops (we use Captain Hook's.) But it would be a long drive there & back. Of course you could make a day of it and check out Pigeon Key (museum, historic buildings, snorkeling), Bahia Honda State Park (gorgeous beaches), or the Key Deer Refuge on Big Pine Key on the way back to Key West.

I have also dove Key Largo with my 11yo daughter and 16yo son they had a great time, diving the variety of dives. She loved the shallow dives. I'm sure Key West is similiar.
