    New Diver looking for suggestions

    Hi there,

I am a new diver and I am wondering about using a wet suit in cold water. I will be diving in the North Atlantic where the water temp will range from 41 to 50 degrees from June to September.

    I am thinking about a Henderson 7 mil semi-dry.

You'll definitely need a 7mm (or more). A lot of people up here dive with 12mm across the torso and 7mm on the arms and legs. The Henderson Aqua Lock suit is a good one at a decent price for someone new to cold water diving. You'll also want a hood and gloves.

You may also find a dry suit while much more expensive will be a lot better in that temperature range. Especially if you are planning multiple dives and longer dives. I dive 41f-42f water now and again and find about 2 30 minute dives is about all I can handle in a wetsuit.

really depends on your tolerance to cold.....I dive pretty cold water and started in just a 7mm, nothing added to the torso or anything like that and I was good in 40 degrees of water for about 45 min.

That said I don't own a 7mm anymore and dive exclusively dry unless im down south

You'll definitely need at least a 7mm. I would also add maybe a hooded vest under with gloves and hood (as stated already). As you progress, you will definitely want to look at drysuits.

I think everyone is spot on. The only thing I would add is get a good hood. Wearing a hood will make a huge difference. I still dive wet. I use a Henderson Hyperstretch 7mm full with a 7mm tunic and a 5mm hood. I also have the Hyperstretch gloves. I can dive without the gloves but my hands hurt a lot after each dive.

The temps for me are around 50F right now. I can tolerate down to 45F but that is typically a deep dive for 11 minutes on the bottom and around 10 minutes of travel time.

All I have to say is BRRRRRRR!!!!!!!
3/4 of the Earth are covered by water and 1/4 by land. Clearly God intended us to spend 3 times as much time fishing and diving than mowing the lawn. - Wiz

Brrrr is right! But that is what to expect when you are diving off the coast of Newfoundland. I have decided on the following:

    - Henderson 8/7mm Semi Dry with hood
    - Henderson Lycra Hot Skin
    - Henderson H2 7mm Gloves
    - Bare 7mm cold water boot
    - Aeris AT400 Pro Reg
    - Oceanic Veo 100 2 Gauge Console

Any feedback on this is greatly appreciated. As a new diver I am hoping this be enough to get me started on the right foot.
