    kelp diving

have only dove the kelp beds twice long time ago. i was wondering if kelp divers consider diving a kelp bed an overhead enviroment since it doesn't seem that easy to surface in the middle of one.

I had honestly never thought of it in that way, but I have to mostly agree with you. I've done maybe 20-30 kelp dives and usually would go in and out from below. I've seen a good number of holes in the kelp when I've looked up, so it's not totally an overhead. Kind of like the submerged forrests at TRL and Beaver, you get in them, look up and see all sorts of fishing line just waiting to trap you.

I once saved a man in Wichita just to watch him dive...(inventor)

the reason for this question is having been to Whaler's Cove at Point Lobos(the most beautiful place on earth IMO)(course I haven't been that many places) I have seen the kelp so thick on the surface it looks like carpet.
