Disney to make new 'Star Wars' films

Disney to make new 'Star Wars' films after buying Lucasfilm for $4.05 billion
    Oct. 30, 2012, 5:48 PM EST
LOS ANGELES (AP) -- A decade after George Lucas said "Star Wars" was finished on the big screen, a new trilogy is destined for theaters as The Walt Disney Co. announced Tuesday that it was buying Lucasfilm Ltd. for $4.05 billion.
The seventh movie, with a working title of "Episode 7," is set for release in 2015. Episodes 8 and 9 will follow. The new trilogy will carry the story of Luke Skywalker, Han Solo and Princess Leia beyond "Return of the Jedi," the third film released and the sixth in the saga. After that, Disney plans a new "Star Wars" movie every two or three years. Lucas will serve as creative consultant in the new movies.

Just think--the same folks who brought you 'John Carter' will now have complete dominion over the most popular franchise in cinema history!

Wonder if the agreement still stands with Spielberg concerning Star Wars profits distribution, or if the new ownership negates that.

Disney also owns Pixar, home of "Monsters, Inc", "Toy Story"x3, "Cars"x2, "Tron", etc. Pixar does some GREAT stuff.
And on the eighth day, God said, "OK, Murphy, you take over"

Disney also owns Marvel Studios and has produced some quality there as well. Getting SW out from under Lucas is a good thing as it opens up the franchise for movies and possibly a live action TV series. I do feel a bit sad as Lucas is sort of hate quitting but 4 billion has to soften the blow for him.

There are not 9 films unless someone popped out 2 I have not seen:

Star Wars IV - New Hope - 1977
Star Wars V - Empire Strikes Back - 1980 (Best of them all IMO)
Star Wars VI - Return of the Jedi - 1983
    Star Wars I - Phantom Menace - 1999
Star Wars II - Attack of the Clones - 2002
Star Wars III - Return of the Sith - 2005

You could also add the 1978 "The Star Wars Holiday Special" and the 1985 "Ewoks: The Battle for Endor" TV movies, if you wanted to be a completist (and wanted to start either fights or a run on airsick bags). I'll bet Lucus would love to forget both of those.
