As a member of the SBWS club (Shallow,Bright,Warm and Sober) club, I have no use for a dry suit. My diving is limited to the S. Pacific and Caribbean - oh and some diving in lake in AZ (yes we do have lakes.. sort of) here a 5/6 wetsuit will suffice.
I will like to mention I have left my fins at home before , takes a lot of room in suitcase and have regretted the choice.
Will have to agree a reg set would be a good idea for all the aforementioned reasons. Next would be a computer.

    Sine Timore!

Hell, I nearly died at Windy Point Park, Texas one day when the water temp got to 75 degrees. It took me 3 days to warm up. If it wasn't for Scuba Toys and there heater I wouldn't be here.

Haven't been on the forum for ages, and this was the first topic I read. Funny thing is, I sent a message to a friend earlier today, answering the same question.

This is what I think should be bought (in order) -

    1. Mask and fins (and snorkel if you're really antsy, but personally not).
    2. Insulation (makes such a difference in Tassie) - wet/dry suit, hood, gloves, booties...
    3. Computer
    4. Regs
    5. BC or Backplate/Harness system.
    6. Tank

I think insulation is an area often overlooked. If some open water divers were more comfortable in warm, flexible wet/drysuits, they would probably enjoy diving more; maybe enough to get past the reality check after their open water course...

I place computer before regs, but they are interchangable.

    Good luck!
    Cheers, TD.
