    Back from Bonaire

did our two week vacation in Bonaire.Been back since middle of March. Stayed at the Black Durgon Inn for 7th or 8th or 9th time in last 12 years. I obviously forget how many times I've been there. For those that don't know the place, its 10 rooms shared kitchen on the water north of Capt. Don's etc. It fits us well but its not for everyone. We enjoyed meeting people and sharing the kitchen etc with them. Not all the people but most. Have meet some great people over the years and just try to forget the others. Maybe they feel the same :-) This time we re-acquainted ourselves with friends from Holland and Minnesota. Also meet a new person from Brazil.
Had a great time, very relaxing.
Diving was a lot right at the black durgon as well as Angel City and Tolo. But our favorite dives were at Something Special. Hard to believe that such a varied site is so close to town. Saw many of the usual suspects as well as fair amount of Tarpons in the shallows.
Did see rays, turtles, and octopus here as well. there is just so much diversity of fish life here it boggles my mind. Shallows and reef both are loaded with an array of fish. Also did see a frog fish here too.
Also did "run" into the manta on my last dive at the black durgon. Had been hearing about it from others it was just weird to find it at the end of our trip.
    Sorry no pictures.
thinking of getting a GoPro for my next trip.Like the idea of using something to help with fish identification. Somehow what you see and what you remember are two different things and certainly can't find it in the book. :-)
Someone at the Black Durgon was using a simple point and shoot camera with housing and I thought it was a great idea. They suggested the GOPro to me. Will be back in July for brief trip and hope to have GoPro by then.

Man, my mouth is watering just thinking about Bonaire.

Is the Black Durgon Inn next to Angel City? I'm trying to place it. I think we dove near it on one of our trips.

My brother switched from a sea & sea to a gopro. He sets on a photo every 3 seconds and leaves it on for the wholw dive. Then he goes thourgh and finds the ones where the fish is pointed right & ditches the rest. He's gotten pretty quick going thourgh them. I'm thinking of getting one. I had a cheap ($50) camera that took lousy stills but fair video. It lasted 4 days then died. I'm more interested in diving than doing photo's but they are neat to show my non diving family what I do.

Another option you might consider is the Tachyon Micro-HD. It's tiny and inexpensive ($149). I attached mine right to my mask. Just before I submerge I press a button and forget it. Set to stills it takes a picture every 2 seconds - set to video it will record about 4 hours before the memory card is full. Either way I get everything I saw on the entire dive with no additional task loading. It's just there recording everything I look at. Not happy with the way he laid his spear gun on the coral.

snagel, the black durgon is past Capt.Don's going north about 3/4 mile. its small and easy to miss. it has some affiliation with diver's paradise which is just before it if that helps. I can get more specific if it helps. the small wall is right off its dock.
thanks for tips about video cameras. i am planning on going with the GoPro as its has lots of users and info etc, also it seems a rather complex issue and i am with mcr0122--i like to dive not really into video photos etc, doing it more for fish id help and some just cause people keep asking....
thanks for tip about setting it to take photo every 3 or 4 sec. that sounds like a winner to me.

Was back on Bonaire July 20- July 27th. Stayed with a dive group at Windsock resort south of town. Sorry I am adding this a bit late. Did usual dive sites,Karparta,1000 steps, oil slick, red slave, white slave, hilmer hooker etc new for me was cliff which I did like and hope to do again. will be back this winter
at the black durgon inn. Not a big fan of windsock resort but never say never may stay there again. hope to stay at another place someday. have been to Plaza and Buddies as well. Carib. Club looks interesting in my future. did stop in there after diving oil slick.

We have been considering Bonaire but are still doing some research on it. Sounds like the shore diving there is excellent from what others have been telling us.

The most relaxing and easiest diving I've found. Jump in a truck and drive down the road until you find a place and jump in. No boat schedule and awesome reef and fish.
