    DIY Wing

This is my latest do-it-yourself project, a sidemount wing/bladder. The base is MSR water drinking bag that I purchased from Amazon for 37.00 bucks. I cut hole in the lid and installed power inflator but some people use the drinking tube and orally inflate these bags. Using a power inflator I decided that I would also install in over pressure relief value for obvious reason. I attach bungee to each of the holes in corner and that is secures the wing to me. The trick in using something like this is not be over weighted since putting a lot air in the wing causes it to balloon up and not very streamline. I only use it when Iím diving 3 mil suit and AL80 tanks. With dual AL80 at 3000 psi I found that Iím neutral in the water so the only weight I need to carry is enough to offset the gas I use with is about 4 lbs to 6 lbs of weight. Fully inflated the wing will support about 18lbs of weight hang from it and still floats. I would not use this wing for boat dives, steel tanks, heavy wetsuits, wall dives just for safety reason but it sure is fun to do a 20 or 30 foot shore dive with a couple AL40 or AL80 and standard sidemount web harness. Projects like this need to be approached with caution and be careful that not to exceed you abilities and always have a backup plan if something goes south.

They have be using MSR bags down in Florida and Mexico for lot years, mostly in the springs and cave systems. People like Steve Martin that wrote the standards for PADI sidemount coarse and Steve Bogart use to teach students to use the MSR bags as BC in their sidemount class. Dive Rite released a pillow for additional trim options when diving CCR and took off as sidemount wing but it only has 10lbs of lift. We have built our own sidemount plates and assembled some of our own harness and even built some drop D-Rings. Here you go Bob, check this guy out he using the Dive Rite Trim pillow and piece of bungee.

If you want to Dive Rite Pillow you need to get now because they have been discontinued by Drive Rite in April, check Scubatoys but I got my for dive gear express under the CCR section. I have one and they are neat but they are only 10lbs of lift.

I don't see them on Dive Gear Express you might want to call them if you want one.
