    Grand Cayman - July 2014

Heading there for my first time in a few days. We will be staying at Discovery Point on 7 mile beach.

Any tips / tricks / do's / dont's unique to Cayman that y'all might be willing to share?

    Thanks,
    Duke

Alot depends on how long you plan on staying and how much non-dive time you have.

1 - the shopping and dining are more expensive than here in the states, so plan for this going in.
2 - Make at least one dining trip to Chicken!Chicken! it's in a strip mall off 7-mile. Amazing chicken and prices are pretty good too.
3 - Try the patties. They sell them in almost everywhere, I LOVE them.
4 - Go to stingray city. Diving is good, but if you have non-divers (esp kids) the wading-depth stingray city is great too.
5 - go to the turtle farm, playing with the baby turtles is a blast!
6 - everyone accepts US$ so don't stress about currency, but you may get cayman$ back in change.
7 - don't be afraid to take the bus! It's cheap, and they run constantly during the day.
8 - find out the cruise ship schedule and stay away from the pier area while they are in port, because it's crowded and hectic!

lastly, don't forget to relax. Don't pack so much activities into the days that you run constantly from one to another. Spend time on the beach, especially at sunset!

one more thing.... Cuban cigars are legal there, so if you are inclined, enjoy! But be forewarned that real cubans are expensive. Don't try to bring back a box of them.

    Thanks for the tips!

We will be there for 8 days and after reading your suggestion on the cruise ship schedules it looks like there will be no ships in port from 1800 hours on the 11th through 0800 on the 14th. That gives us Friday night through Monday morning without multiple ships in port. Pretty much every day that we are there prior to that break, and after, there mostly 2 to 3 ships a day in port.

I never would have thought about the bus. The turtle farm and string ray city are on the list already as well as the USS Kittiwake, and maybe a round or two of Golf. But that is as far ahead thinking we have done.

Turtle Reef across from the Turtle Farm is one of the best shore dives. Sundivers is on-site for tanks etc. Also there's the Macabuca Tiki bar for lunch. http://www.crackedconch.com.ky/turtl...norkelling.php

Operators that pick up from Discovery Point might make the run around to the north wall - or some leave from the marinas on the Sound. Ghost Mountain, Hammerhead Hill, Eagle Ray Pass, Babylon are among the best. http://www.idivecayman.com/

the bus goes right past your condo and up to the Turtle Farm: http://thebusschedule.com/EN/ky/#.U7ETTkC4OSo

I will definately do a trip report. I have one I am working on right now about my recent experience in Roatan with Barefoot Divers. Short story... LOVED IT!

Little too late, but hopefully someone directed you to Lighthouse Point. It is around the corner from turtle reef and doesn't get as much traffic. Easy shore dive too and well marked with several underwater landmarks. The guardian statue is pretty cool!
