    Cozumel Palace

Anyone have any experience staying at Cozumel Palace or diving with the onsite dive op Aqua safari?
We are staying there for a week next month & some of the reviews I have read online about Aqua Safari make me think I might want to dive with another operator? It has been about five years since we last visited Cozumel so anything I should/must do while there? Any info would b great.

    Thanks
    Frank

I stayed at Cozumel Palace 5 years ago. It was nice. Unless things have changed, here is what I experienced.

Food was good, not the best but good with no complaints. 3 different restaurants to choose as part of all inclusive as well as grill/bar near pool with a pool seats at the bar. There is a small area with sand as a so called beach but there is not a beach leading into the water. It is rocky entrance to the water or jump off pier. They do have some concrete steps near pier to enter for shore dives. I think they give you free air as long as you grab your tank before the scuba shop closes,i.e. 5pm???? They have a few things each night for entertainment like casino night, salsa dancing etc. They also have a crew at the pool that it is there job to engage people for volleyball, pool dancing etc. during the day. Many people are timeshare owners at one of the many Palace resorts but I think it was about 50/50 timeshare to visitor when I was there. Easy walk to town and they allow you to visit the other resorts for the day to check them out if you choose.

As far as dive ops, Aqua Safari is the place we used every time we have been to Coz. They were the op at the Cozumel Palace when we were there 5 years ago then a year later, hotel switched to another op, then a year after that, back to AS. We like them. At Coz Palace, Rinse tanks, gear lockers etc right on the pier next to pool. The house reef is OK for an evening dive and 5 years ago there were a few sea horses just under the pier. Other Ops will pick you up at the pier I believe if you prefer to use a different op but I never had any complaint with AS. Used them 6 times to Coz. They are a typical dive op. they have a early fast boat and 3 larger (one 8 diver and two 14 divers) boats.

    Hope this helps.

I've heard of Aqua Safari. You might want to do a search on the other board for Aqua Safari. If I remember right there was a huge "rant" about them several years back on a thread there. I might not be thinking the the right dive op, but I'm thinking these were the ones.

Personally, I don't have any information on either the dive op or the resort. But, if you take me along I will be glad to write up the trip report!

We are members of the Palace and have used AS. I haven't used them since the Palace bought them out. The only negative I have heard of is that the boats fill up. When we go back I plan to use AS for the free morning dives then some other shop for afternoon and night dives.

FREE?????? How is that? did you pay anything extra for a package when you became a member? I can tell you they are not offering that now.

Maybe I used the word free a little loosely. When you book a room for 7 days you get a $1500 "resort credit". You can use this credit for the spa or day trips etc... At the Coz Palace you can use the whole $1500 for diving. I understand it is only good for the morning two tank trip. You do have to pay the taxes on whatever you purchase too, say they charge $125 for the dives you would pay $10-15 at checkout.

When I stayed there I had an incredible room. I had a two floor suite and a built in Jacuzzi which was perfect for soaking dive gear. We had our own personal concierge and let me tell you it makes a hell of a difference. We tipped our cabana boy a buck nearly every time he brought us a drink and we never went empty. He brought food from the gourmet restaurants for us to eat at the pool side bar. We didn't use the hotel scuba outfit. I heard a few nasties about them. We had a local outfit pick us up at the Palace pier. No extra charge for that. The snorkeling in front of the hotel was great. The diving was your typical Cozumel shore dive. It's a pricey place; but, awesome.

You might try to call ahead and book the dives early. I don't know if they will do that but what is the worst they can do to you? Let me know how it goes, I have been wanting to try out one of the rooms Zeagle Eagle was talking about.
