Reef View - Google's virtual dive in Belize

Google teamed up with Catlin Survey to create a special edition of Street View - replacing the roads and buildings of your home town with beautiful images from Half Moon Caye Wall, in Belize's Lighthouse Reef Atoll! You can cruise around through the reef just like in street view; while it sure isn't the same as diving out here, it's as close as we've seen!

    Check it out here:

Impressive!!! I don't hear bubbles and I'm not wet, so it's a tease! A good tease, but still a tease

I once saved a man in Wichita just to watch him dive...(inventor)

Meh, it does nothing for me. There is so much more to a reef than can be shown in that.

This kind of work is important for establishing baselines for reef ecosystems (shifting baselines can do a lot of harm) so I am really glad a company like google are doing some of the work to map the reefs, but there really is no replacement for actually being in the water and feeling the world move around you.

Having said that, if they can sell it as a positive thing for the everyday internet user then maybe more projects like this will happen and we can get a better picture of negative change in the marine environment.

Elitist comments crack me up. Ho hum - I'm so good and world traveled that I can't be bothered. Nothing you could show me could possibly impress. LOL I worked with some pedantic people like that. Always a source of entertainment.
